Packing, Unpacking, and Moving Tips before and after a move

I LIKE TO MOVE IT, MOVE IT! This is the first song that always comes to mind whenever we pack a client’s space. We always end up having a dance party! When I was younger, I used to love moving. At the end of every school year, I used to come to my mom’s classroom and help her organize, pack, and prep for the following school year. As an adult, moving can be a huge pain. Milestone moves lead to great new chapters but can cause a stir of emotions. My greatest move was moving across the country with three days notice from Florida to Utah. Sadness for leaving the old behind. Excitement for the new and unknown ahead. Jumbled chaos in between. But, it doesn’t need to be. Whether you decide to pack yourself, hire a moving company or hire professional organizers to get you situated, you need some kind of plan and we are breaking it down for you.

PRO TIPS

  1. Before you pack, purge.  Pull everything out. This can get overwhelming but remember to breathe and take a step back from it.

  2. Deciding what to keep, toss, and donate can be rather stressful. All of your belongings have memories and attachments behind them and can be hard to part with it. CLICK HERE to see how to break it down.

  3. Containment is key! Grouping like items together in boxes, rather than dumping it all in makes for an easier transition.

  4. Color-coding the boxes with each room’s belongings makes for some magic. It keeps the spaces contained. Think of it this way, everything that goes in the guest room, would be labeled blue and everything from the playroom would be labeled in orange. By doing this, the movers and organizers know which room to place the boxes. P.S. Label each door or room in the new place with the correct tape that corresponds.

BONUS PRO-TIPS

  1. Organizers can coordinate every detail for you.

  2. We can meet the movers, help unpack, and then, organize.

  3. The boxes can be unpacked prior to us arriving, and then we can just organize in. Don’t use oversized boxes that nobody can move.

  4. PRO TIP: Label everything and color-code each room. On arrival to your new home, pre-label each room with a piece of colored tape that corresponds with the tape on the box. This way movers will know what room to place certain boxes in and we will know what needs to be unpacked and/or organized.
